"On Top Of Things"

Look real hard and you may be able to see the city of Tucson 9000 feet below! Gulp! I was trying to capture that feeling in this painting. My hit for the day was when a young girl came by and chatted, left, then came back giving me a card with a $5 bill inside, thanking me for painting. That was worth more than selling it at gallery price! This plein air piece measures 11" x 14" on quality archival canvas board.

"Windy Point"

This was my first trip up to the top of Mt Lemmon in Tucson, Arizona. Well, almost to the top. It has an elevation of 9000 feet! Would you believe the number of people trudging up this mountain on bicycles?! Unbelieveable.!

Welcome back Pallette Knife! The first ten years of painting was done strickly with a knife only! I was inspired to try it again. I hope you like this one as much as I do. It is filled with texture and vivid color!

My latest plein-air adventure led me to Sabino Canyon for the first time. Wow! The views were spectacular. I captured the sun streaking down the side of this cliff.

Impression of Fall

Glad to see you back, thank you. While up in Pinetop, I started this painting and preceeded to get rained on! I had to move my easel under a tree and then it began to pour. Water and oil don't miss, you know, so I ended up finishing it back home in my studio.

Catalina Cactus

I think I'm getting the hang of this Arizona landscape. This is a 16" x 20" original impressionistic oil painting on quality archival canvas panel. Enjoy! Arizona Sky

The skies are absolutely breathtaking here in Arizona. Naturally, I just had to paint my very first one just as the sun was setting behind the Catalina Hills. Can you feel the wind pushing the clouds around and can you almost feel the light spray of rain hitting the desert floor? It has been a real challenge to keep painting during this move to a new state.

CACTUS FOUND!

Well, well, well, I found a cactus here in Arizona and decided to paint it. My very first one! Seriously, though, everywhere I turn there are mucho species of cacti surrounding my existance here.....I must say, I really enjoyed focusing on the warm and cool color changes in this piece. This is an 11" x 14" original oil on quality canvas board. Enjoy!

I will be very busy painting with fellow Arizona artists in PineTop the first of October, followed by a painting excursion to Jerome. Stay toned for the plein-air pieces from those outings.

ARTISTS AT WORK

This is such a typical scene of plein air artists who go out in the field to paint. These two friends of mine literally did just that. They are out in the hay field on this ranch near Morro Bay. As you can see, one is taking a little respite!

JEANNIE'S ROSES

Here's a revealing note on an artist's "trick". I was given a rejected canvas that had an image painted on it by a friend, Susan Greaves. She had painted over the image with a light mauve wash. I decided to play with this canvas by painting these flowers. I was influenced by the background wash when chosing the colors.

I think I may be getting a handle on my values. I notice if I turn off the lights and look at the painting in the dark, it helps! Go figure!

Flowers are a good thing to concentrate on when I can't get out to paint. The air is filled with smoke due to all the forest fires here in Northern California!
